Biography
Gonçalo Fernandes is a classically trained violinist, educator, and creative director whose work bridges classical traditions with contemporary innovation. His career is driven by a passion for storytelling through music, collaboration across disciplines, and using art as a platform for social change.
His journey with the violin began at age ten, leading to intensive classical training and culminating in a Master’s in Performance. Along the way, Gonçalo explored the intersection of music and education, earning a postgraduate degree in music education and incorporating mindfulness techniques to help students overcome performance anxiety.
As both a performer and leader, Gonçalo has worked across orchestral, chamber, and multidisciplinary settings. He has collaborated with renowned ensembles, performed in prestigious venues, and led masterclasses for aspiring musicians. His artistic curiosity extends beyond traditional performance—his work embraces contemporary influences, experimental collaborations, and advocacy-driven projects.
In 2019, he founded Vision Ensemble, a genre-blending group combining strings, saxophone, and piano. The ensemble's mission was not just to perform but to use music as a tool for awareness and action.
Gonçalo’s latest project, Prosiect Rhuban Rhudd (Red Ribbon Project), is a multidisciplinary initiative that merges music, visual art, and public discourse to amplify conversations around HIV awareness. Partnering with Cardiff and Vale Health Charity, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and leading experts in the field, the project exemplifies his commitment to art as activism.
For Gonçalo, music is more than performance—it is a catalyst for dialogue, transformation, and connection. Through his work as a musician, educator, and creative director, he continues to explore new ways of breaking boundaries, fostering collaboration, and shaping the future through art.
